BREARLEY FAMILY

Harry Brearley  born 1871 in Sheffield lived at Old Whittington.  He was the inventor of ‘rustless’ (stainless) steel.

Whilst much is known about Harry his son Leo had quite a story to tell about his internment during WW1.

This article from the Derbyshire Courier 3 July 1915 documents Leo’s internment and eventual escape.

For anyone interested in the ‘English Camp’ at Groningen more can be read at Internment of British sailor/soldiers of the Royal Naval Division in Groningen during the First World War (wereldoorlog1418.nl)

According to the Lynn advertiser Leo had returned to his Naval base at Crystal palace by 16th July.

Leo survived the war and by 1919 had returned to Whittington where he married.
