ELIZA SALES

I came across a very sad story in the Derbyshire Times/Chesterfield Herald 13th May 1882.

The story was about Eliza Sales, she was a widow who had lived in Whittington for many years although she came from Whitwell and was married at Clowne.

Eliza Heath married Thomas Sales at Clowne on 28 November 1831. Elizas parish at the time of her marriage was given as Whitwell.

By the time of the 1851 census Eliza was living in Whittington with her husband and they had five children listed living with them.

In 1861 they are listed as living on South Street at New Whittington but by 1871 they are back living on Church Street at Old Whittington and that is where they remained.

The 1881 census list Eliza’s address as Mount Pleasant on Church St. and by this time she was a widow living with her grandson John Cory.

The next piece of information for Eliza is very sad, this was the excerpt that prompted me to try and find a bit more out about Eliza Sales:

Eliza was buried in Old Whittington churchyard on 12 May 1882 aged 68, possibly with her husband Thomas. There is a burial registered at Old Whittington on February 5th 1879 for Thomas Sayles (spelt slightly differently) which could be Eliza’s husband.

As yet I haven’t found her grave but if I do I will hopefully be able to post the picure of the gravestone on here.
