I found this article in the Guardian from October 17 1856. This comes from a time when Whittington Hall was a grand estate. It makes interesting reading, however the punishment seems very harsh by todays standards.
This map shows how the grounds around Whittington Hall would have looked when the above incident took place. I have tried to knit the two maps together to give a rough idea!
